Conference catering

For each day included in your conference registration (e.g. 4-day vs 1-day options), we will provide a catered lunch and morning/afternoon refreshments, as well as an evening BBQ on Saturday 5 July.

A large proportion of our catering will be plant-based, and be accompanied by allergen guidance. We will do our best to accommodate specific requirements that delegates have included in their registration questionnaire; if you suffer from allergies and are unsure what you can eat, please speak to a team member at the registration desk.

While the catering team have been made aware of all delegates’ disclosed allergies, they cannot guarantee the absence of allergen traces within its food.

Important:

  • If you have a serious allergy, please bring your EpiPen or equivalent medication, in case of emergency.
  • Several conference delegates have disclosed a nut allergy (including airborne). Please don’t open or eat any nut-based foods within the conference spaces.

Those booked onto the Monk’s House and Towner Eastbourne excursion will receive a vegetarian packed lunch (e.g. sandwich, fruit, snacks and water).

Eating on campus

Please note that the University of Sussex campus cafes/restaurants will be operating a reduced service over the summer months, and many of the smaller outlets will be closed.

  • Eat Central (the main campus refectory) will be open from 07:30-18:30 each day, though only the Tortilla outlet will be open past 16:00 on weekdays. Only limited (café-style) options are available over the weekend. Those booked into campus accommodation will receive a breakfast ‘pass’ to use in Eat Central.
  • Falmer Bar (the Student’s Union bar and kitchen) will be open on weekdays but not weekends. On Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 July, their bar will be open midday-22:00, and kitchen midday-19:00 (see their Food Menu and Opening Times).
  • The IDS (Institute of Development Studies) café & bar will be open during weekdays (09:00-21:00, or 20:00 if quiet) but not weekends. Their kitchen is open 07:30-14:00, so does not serve food in the evening. Groups (6+) can book a table by emailing: cateringrequests@ids.ac.uk and – with permission from bar staff on the night – may order a takeaway service (see below) to eat with purchased drinks (delegates should direct deliveries to IDS Café & Bar, postcode BN1 9RE, and clear away all packaging).

There are a few small shops on campus, including a convenience store (Co-op in Bramber House), as well as a pharmacy and gift shop in the Student Centre. Please note, however, that conference campus accommodation is not equipped with cooking facilities.

Those staying in campus accommodation may wish to order takeaway meals in the evenings; the following services will deliver to University of Sussex campus accommodation:

When ordering, please direct deliveries to East Slope Bodiam Main Reception (postcode BN1 9RJ), as you will need to meet the driver there.

Eating out in Brighton

Brighton has a very vibrant and varied restaurant scene, with many catering to a range of dietary requirements; pre-booking is strongly recommended / required.

Our conference partners Visit Brighton have offered our delegates a range of discounts at restaurants, pubs and entertainment/activities in Brighton City Centre (further information to be shared with delegates via email).

Particular favourites of the conference team include:
